Are Mac’s Bulletproof?

Everyday there are new worms and viruses being written set to attack Windows based computer systems throughout the world.  The question on many technology professionals is it because of the security flaws that are discovered daily with Windows?  We believe many of the leading computer operating systems including Windows, Linux and Mac’s are susceptible to operating system security vulnerabilities, no one is going to be left out.

Every day many business clients ask Bulletproof if they should look at Mac’s as an alternative to Windows based computer systems?

This is a difficult question to answer in some occasions and really rests on the business need of those using the systems.  Microsoft Windows has and continues to be the industry leader since Windows 3.1 and even back in the DOS days.  Apple does have some advantages in certain vertical markets.  The answer this question is a tough one and really depends on the client.

In some situations the reasoning is because of a huge misconception that all other operating systems offer a higher level of security over Windows.  This is not completely true.  It is true that Windows and Microsoft do get a large amount of negative press on security vulnerabilities in the Windows operating system.  Why is this?  Could this be simply because that the majority of the systems in use today run Windows?

The misconception that Mac’s and other offer a higher level of security is simply a misconception, in our opinion.  The latest announcement of the Tored worm for Mac’s is just a indication of this.  This worm, just like many in the Windows world has the ability to spread via email.  Now, there are no reported cases of this worm in the wild today, however this just goes to show that there are vulnerabilities in every piece of computer software.
