Beware of Chinese Domain Registration Scam hitting Alberta Businesses

Your domain name is just as important to your business as your telephone number, street address and all other ways that people can reach you and your business.  By keeping your domain name up to date allows your clients, prospects, business partners and other colleagues to communicate with you, visit your website and will allow your staff access to resources in your office.

There are many organizations across the globe looking at monetizing by scaring Alberta business owners that someone may be attempting to register their Chinese variant of their domain name.  This is nothing new and this potential scam has been leaving many business owners wondering that their domains are at risk when they really quite safe.

Bulletproof recommends the following when registering your domain name:

  • Use a domain registration firm that is recognized by IT Professionals or organizations including your local Better Business Bureau.
  • Ensure that all Internet transactions are secure.  Look for the lock in your browser and the https at the beginning of the Internet address
  • When registering your domain name, ensuring that the privacy option is enabled.  This will vary with different domain registrars.  Many of the leading registrars offer this with .com and .ca domains.
  • Many domain registrars will not allow transfers without your approval by email.  .COM domains name require an authorization code to allow a transfer to occur.

If your business has no plans on doing business outside of Alberta, Canada or North America there is no reason to setup a domain outside of the areas you do business.  This includes any domains like the .CN domains that are part of this Internet scam.

Many clients of Bulletproof InfoTech have been receiving emails and forwarding them our team for verification.  Always consult with your computer consulting professional if you have questions about any items that impact your business technology.

Here is an example of the email that many Bulletproof clients have received.
